A short guide for new grads
1. Sort your registration early
Physios, OTs and psychologists need registration with AHPRA and their national board before they can practise, and provisional psychologists work under supervision. Speech pathologists are not AHPRA-registered, but most employers ask for Certified Practising membership of Speech Pathology Australia. Apply as soon as you are eligible, as processing takes time.
2. Ask about supervision and support
In an interview, ask how often you will get supervision, who provides it, what your caseload looks like in the first few months, and whether there is a professional development budget. Good answers to these matter more early on than a small difference in pay.
3. Know the pay rules
Queensland Health and the private sector use different pay scales. Our Queensland allied health pay guide shows both, with the sources, so you can check an offer.
4. Look beyond Brisbane
Regional employers in Townsville, Cairns, Mackay, Rockhampton and Toowoomba often take graduates and offer broad caseloads.
